Raja Harishchandra, the first feature length movie made in India! Pretty interesting.little gem from the past. Unfortunately only two reels survive, but it’s still awesome that we’re able to see it. The director, DG Phalke, shows that he has a really developed sense of continuity editing like that that had been shown in American and European films at the time. He also makes use of overlays, Indian folk acting, and some pretty fucking elaborate sets to bring us a pretty fucking morbid tale about a king who, to honour a promise to some Unibomber-like sage, sacrifices his kingdom, wife and kid. Merp.
